Movie selections... (not a review)

I know my taste in movies is a bit odd.  I have been trying to find a possible hidden gem amongst the movies I haven't already seen.  I was thinking today that that doesn't seem right when looking for movies in general.  So I have decided to use Netflix "most popular" and start at beginning of their list, previously seen by me or not.  I know the first up is "Cabin in the woods" which is one of my most favorite movies.  :)  So now you know how I pick the movie to watch.  Also suggestions always welcome!  Lastly, thank you for reading my little ramblings.  Feel free to comment, but please no spoilers!

Vile

"Vile" ~ 2011

Netflix description = Four friends are kidnapped and brought to a decrepit house where they're locked in a room with six strangers.  They have 24 hours to mount an escape, but they must endure excruciating pain in order to win their freedom.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I turned this on completely expecting another "Saw" type knock off movie, but was pleasantly surprised! The twist is enough to keep you interested in both plot and characters.  The actions needed to "win their freedom", and the way things are carried out are entertainment on its own.  I will say this is yet another movie that made me wonder....  What would I, or you, do, or even be able to do if ever in such predicament.
My score  4/5  good movie :)
Extinction
"Extinction" ~ 2011
Netflix description = A retrovirus able to crossbreed the genes of plants, animals and humans is accidentally released creating a world of horrific mutations.  In just 2 days most of humankind is dead and the rest are turned into hideous murderous mutations.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is one of the best zombie-ish movies I have seen in awhile.  The cross mutations keep you, and the small group of survivors on alert.  Zombie movies are becoming so overdone that it was nice to see a fresh take on old story!

My score  5/5.... loved it!!

Sweatshop

"Sweatshop" ~ 2009

Netflix description = This gore soaked grindhouse indie follows a group of revelers who find themselves trapped in an old warehouse and fighting for their lives after a late night party unleashes the wrath of a brutal sledgehammer wielding madman.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I have stated before, in the world of horror movie genre, a lot of times we lower the expectations just for the fun of the movie.  This is one of those.  The above Netflix description is not quite on point, and there were a few plot confusions, but if you are looking for brutal killings while being a complete mindless gorefest, this is for you!  Personally I liked it alot!
My score 4/5....  bc I am a fan of the gore lol
A Darker Reality
"A Darker Reality" ~ 2008
Netflix description = Tortured in a dank basement by a serial killer known only as Ghost, a group of women frantically search for a way to escape their psychotic abductor, while a cop and a psychiatrist work to close in on the killer from the outside.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I liked this movie.  It was fairly predictable, but still enjoyable.  If even one line stays with you after watching a film, it made an impression.  This movie achieved that.  I will never again hear the words "click-click" without thinking of this film.  In the end it was a nice, average distraction.

My score  3/5

12/12/12

"12/12/12" ~ 2012

Netflix description = When baby Sebastian is born on Dec 12, 2012, everyone around him suddenly starts to die.  Soon his mother realizes that her son is not just a victim or happenstance, but is actually the spawn of hell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First point scored for high gore factor early on, and fairly unexpected.  It is a silly plot, and one scene in particular I found just morally wrong... and if you know me, that takes a lot!  However, I went in knowing that this was a bad B-movie and as a result, I was not at all disappointed
My score 3/5... nice average mindless entertainment
Greystone Park
"Greystone Park" ~ 2012
Netflix description = Hoping to document the existence of ghosts several thrill seeking pals take their video cameras into Greystone Park, an abandoned psychiatric hospital notorious for its cruel treatment of patients.  But the ghost hunters soon become the hunted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was a little disappointed with this one.  It was like a bad ghost hunters marathon.  Hand held camera angles and lots of "did you hear that? did you see that?".  The abandoned hospital movies are ususally predictable, and this followed many same plots, just not well done.

My score 2.5/5...  I didn't totally dislike it, but it was below average...

Diary of a Cannibal

"Diary of a cannibal" ~ 2007

Netflix description = In this girl eats boy story inspired by actual events, Noelle and Adam arrange to meet for dinner after a string of online conversations.  But what begins as a harmless flirtation ends in the unspeakable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This movie was loosely based on real German cannibal Armin Meiwes.  Even though I knew the story, this film still held my attention with lots of back story.  I like the "real monster" movies, knowing that people can be that twisted, and call it love or whatnot fascinates me.  Why do we have our own limits on what we do for "love", and what creates those boundaries for some, but not others.  Anyway good movie, even worth watching again :)
My score 4/5  I liked it lots and made me think about things :)
Silent Hill - Revelation
"Silent Hill - Revelation" ~ 2012
Netflix description = Haunted by shocking nightmares and unsettled by her fathers disappearance just before her 18th birthday, Heather goes on the hunt for him - - and discovers a disturbing truth about her own identity in this suspenseful sequel to the hit horror flick.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First off, I am not a gamer, so I know nothing about the game.  I saw the first Silent Hill movie and was confused until the video game reference came up.  Anyhow, what I liked about this movie is you didn't have to be a gamer, nor did you have to see the first movie to enjoy this sequel.  This was a good, strong story line that was action filled and fun to watch.  I'm not sure about the horror aspect, but a good watch nonetheless  :)

My score... 3/5 average...

Satanic

"Satanic" ~ 2006

Netflix description = When she wakes up with amnesia Michelle has no idea who she is and whether she has any family.  Shes sent to a group home and befriends a kindly Dr., but things take a dark turn when people around her start turning up dead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
I actually enjoyed this movie much more than I thought I would.  There, of course, were some cliches but an enjoyable time spent anyhow.  The plot has a few twists and turns, some predictable and some not.  Worth the watch, and possible watch again :)
My score 3.5/5...  just a bit more fun than average
Devil Seed
"Devils Seed" ~ 2012
Netflix description = A college coeds psychic reading goes horrifically wrong and the next day she awakes possessed by a demonic entity, experiencing mysterious scratch marks all over her body and terrifying hallucinations.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I found this movie to be the standard demonic possession story.  It was entertaining but certainly not mind blowing.  Definitely a movie to throw in the average category, but worth the mindless entertainment that I often look for!!

My score 3/5, average fun flick :)

Dead End

"Dead End" ~ 2003

Netflix description = After opting for an unfamiliar route through the forest, Frank and his wife stop to help a mysterious woman who seems to be holding a dead baby. ("her name is Amy") But as the bodies pile up a hearse with an invisible driver arrives to cart away the victims.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is not the first time that I have watched this movie.  I love this film and to me its one of the classics, both edited for network tv and without.  I find this story to be well told enough that you think you know full plot and it twists once more at the end... just bc! I like surprises!
My score 5/5 , fun, rewatchable or go watch!
The Beast Beneath
"The Beast Beneath" ~ 2011
Netflix description =  A couple discovers an old map in a family heirloom music box.  The map shows the location of a treasure on the former estate of a Spanish land baron, but guarding the hidden fortune is a huge netherworld creature, a terrifying cave dwelling beast.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I tried three times to get through this movie, and just couldn't do it.  I love bad movies, but this one even excelled the limits for me.  Only positive note... death before opening credits...

My score 1/5 , just don't do it! lol

My Little Eye

"My Little Eye" ~ 2002

Netflix description = 5 young people must bunk together for 6 months as part of a tv reality show that will award its winner $1million.  The catch is that if even one person leaves, no one wins a cent. As the players -- brainiac Danny, loafer Rex, frat boy Matt, perfect Emma, and aspiring actress Charlie -- settle in, things turn ugly when one is found dead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This (to me) was a nice surprise.   The story is a little slow in the beginning but quickly gets interesting.  A few more out of nowhere plot twists made this a good movie, again surprisingly worth watching!
My score 4/5 = above average but not amazing, but worth another watch :)
Trapped Ashes
"Trapped Ashes" ~ 2006
Netflix description = Trapped in a house of horror 7 people discover the only way they will get out alive is to tell their scariest stories.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had seen this before, but didn't remember until it began.  I really enjoyed this film.  It is 4 mini tales in one large story.  Come the end they all intertwine in a very crafty way, making this a good story and fun flick that I would watch again, and still enjoy!

My score 4/5 , a little above average and in the will rewatch category

The Slaughterhouse Massacre

"The Slaughterhouse Massacre" ~ 2005

Netflix description = Years ago a girl was raped and murdered inside a towns slaughterhouse and the accused killer was hanged in an act of vigilante justice.  Now a group of students is out to test the legend that his ghost reappears on the anniversary of his death.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did not select this movie looking for an award winning film.  This had low budget, cliche, B-movie all over the title, and I was not disappointed.  As predicted it has almost every cliche in the bad horror movie genre but it was fun to watch.  Also it made me jump once!  That in itself is an accomplishment that doesnt happen too often if ever.
My score 3/5.  Average score, with one good jump :)
Jacob
"Jacob" ~ 2011
Netflix description = Lonely and disturbed Jacob Kell loved his little sister more than anything on earth.  When she is tragically murdered by her drunken stepfather Jacob retaliates the only way he knows how... with seemingly limitless brutal violence.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I actually liked this movie quite a bit.  The majority of the movie is back story and character development, which turns out to be important later on.  One definite lesson in this movie is the power of angry mob retaliation.  The gore factor is fairly high, and one fairly creative death scene.  Overall, worth watching!

My score 3/5.  Overall enjoyable mindless entertainment :)

Cherry Tree Lane

"Cherry Tree Lane"  ~ 2010

Netflix description = A quiet evening at home for Christine and Michael turns into a night of horror when 3 teens hold them hostage waiting to exact revenge on their son.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First, I don't know why this was considered to be a horror movie.  I wouldn't even call it a thriller.  This was more of a drama than anything else.  It starts out very, very slow.  When the teens force their way in it is still not explained why they want the son.  The truth comes out later, but by that time I had almost lost interest.  The best part of the film would be in the last 15 or 20 minutes, but with a mistimed ending that left more questions.
My score  2/5 only bc it kept me interested to see what was going to happen
