"Exorcismus"

"Exorcismus" ~ 2010

Netflix description = When their teenage daughter reports curious symptoms that point toward a demonic possesion, a desperate family calls a priest in to investigate and allows her exorcism to be secretly recorded.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a fun, entertaining movie, but it was nothing new to the exorcism movies.  They did do a really good job with backstory, which as you know I find very important!  Overall a good watch.
My score  3/5
"The Tall Man"
"The Tall Man" ~ 2012
Netflix description = The faded mining town of Cold Rock is haunted by a lethal specter known as The Tall Man, thought to be behind the disappearance of numerous children.  When Julia Dennings son David also vanishes, she sets out to unlock the mystery herself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was again a thriller not really a horror, but an awesome movie! The storyline revolving around The Tall Man is creative with huge twist at the end.   Very enjoyable! Go watch!

My score  4/5

"They"

"They" ~ 2002

Netflix description = A graduate student in psychology who has always harbored a nagging fear of the dark, is forced to confront her worst nightmare when a frightening real life event triggers old memories.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a fun little thriller about what lies in the shadows and goes bump in the night.  I found it well told and held my attention.  Basically average thriller, but a good watch.
"Identity"
"Identity" ~ 2003
Netflix description = Complete strangers stranded at a remote desert motel during a raging storm soon find themselves the target of a deranged murderer.  As their numbers thin out, the travelers begin to turn on each other while trying to figure out who the killer is.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I don't know why I had not watched this little gem before!  I thought I had, but quickly realized it was new to me.  This was a really good movie!  I liked the story line as it was very well told and even a couple good twists as well.  Just a fun watch in general!

My score 4/5

"The girl next door"

"The Girl Next Door" ~ 2007

Netflix description = Inspired by true events this thriller set in 1958 follows the harrowing story of two adolescent girls who, upon losing their parents in an accident, are sent to live with their Aunt Ruth, a sadistic psychopath.  Unbeknownst to the residents of the small New Jersey suburb, the girls endure unthinkable punishment at the hands of their Aunt and three cousins.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have seen several movies based on the torture of Sylvia Likens at the hands of Gertrude Baniszewski and it breaks my heart every time.  This one steered a little more off the story but the end result and horrific events still took place in 1965.  This story is more horrific than horror but a good story nonetheless.
My score   3/5
"VHS"
"VHS" ~ 2012
Netflix description = Hired to steal a rare VHS tape from a secluded house, a group of petty crooks break in and discover a corpse, surrounded by tvs and stacks of tapes.  Now they must watch each horrific and bizarre videos as they search for the correct one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This falls into my favorite "sub-genre" of movies.  I love the movie shorts within a main movie.  The bizarre tapes they find are the real fun watch!  This was one of those movies that after it was over I wanted to see it again - - enlightened with the ending to see if I could catch something to steer me in the right direction.  No, I'm not telling if it did or not, NO spoilers!  Lol go watch!

"The Pact"

"The Pact" ~ 2012

Netflix description = Feeling obligated to return home for the funeral of the mother she despised, Annie soon senses an evil presence in her childhood home.  As she seeks answers about her mothers death, Annie is forced to face demons from her past.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a slow moving but fairly suspenseful movie.  I have watched this now a couple of times, and both times it was not very memorable.  It does leave a few what ifs that I feel should have been answered.  Over all one of those good average, but more background noise type of movies.
My score 3/5
"The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence"
"The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence" ~ 2011
Netflix description = A disturbed loner is so obsessed with the shocking horror film "The Human Centipede" that he decides to replicate the movies grisly experiment in this meta sequel the stakes are raised as 12 unlucky souls endure surgical hell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As an admitted fan of the first movie, I was a little excited to see what they would do next.  I was very disappointed!  There is nothing intriguing, or even interesting about the main character.  I just pitied him.  The only things I did like were the use and imaging of a real centipede, and that it was shot in black and white.  Those 2 deciding factors gained an extra star, but seriously, don't waste your time!!

My score 2/5

"ATM"

"ATM" ~ 2012

Netflix description = When 3 coworkers make a midnight stop at a glass enclosed ATM after their Christmas party, they find themselves trapped by a menacing man outside.  Soon they're fighting for survival a the temperature plunges and the man toys with them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wouldn't categorize this as a horror movie, but it was a very good suspenseful thriller.  The "mad man" has set up his plan so carefully that you wonder if its personal or just someone that messed up...  worth the watch!
My score  3/5    not horror but good movie
"Quarantine 2: Terminal
"Quarantine 2: Terminal" ~ 2011
Netflix description = When a virus that turns its victims into crazed killers infects travelers on an airplane, authorities seal off the jet to let the bug run its course.  Realizing they've been left to die, a flight attendant and a passenger plan a daring escape.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I enjoyed this movie, but there were many references to the first movie, making me wish I had seen that one recently as I forgot more than I realized.  lol   Lots of action and an acceptable amount of gore, good kill scenes and even a couple jumps.  Definitely worth the watch!!

My score 3/5

"The Ward"

"The Ward" ~ 2011

Netflix description = A young woman, Kristen, is sent to a mental institution with a past as dark and haunted as her own.  Terrorized by a ghost, each of the other patients in Kristens ward begin to disappear, and thats just the beginning of her long nightmare.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
John Carpenter is a master of horror and again he did not disappoint.  This intriguing, dark tale had my attention from the very beginning and kept surprising me until the very end.  Definitely worth the watch!!  Side note, this was filmed at Eastern State Hospital, our own local asylum.  :)
My score  3.5/5
"Forget me Not"
"Forget me Not" ~ 2009
Netflix description = A party filled graduation weekend turns into a nightmare for popular class president, Sandy Channing, when her friends begin to vanish one by one.  Soon Sandy discovers they have awakened the vengeful spirit of a girl they mistreated years ago.  Now, she must work to resolve the dark mysteries of her past before she and all her friends become unwilling victims in this bloody horror flick.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I really enjoyed this movies and is now one of my favorites!  There wasn't much back-story included but thankfully enough so you could truly understand the movie.  Not a lot of gore, some good kill scenes, but mostly high on the creepy factor!  Great movie, worth the watch!!

My score  4/5

"Don't be Afraid of the Dark"

"Don't be Afraid of the Dark" ~ 2011

Netflix description = Soon after moving in with her father and his new girlfriend, young Sally discovers she isn't alone in the house.  Strange creatures live there - - and they might not be as friendly as Sally thinks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This movie is what I would categorize as "child friendly" in that it is a more juvenile aspect, and perfect for even the younger horror fans.  To me its like reading John Saul, always a fun easy read, for almost any age.  Anyhow, with that said, this movie was high on the creepy factor.  The skittering noises and quick movements in the shadows were well done.  I even liked the character development and found myself "feeling" for Sally.  I enjoyed it, but again very tame.
My score  3/5
"Chain Letter"
"Chain Letter" ~ 2010
Netflix description = When a group of tech savvy high school pals receive an electronic chain letter that demands they each forward the message or face consequences, they laugh it off as an online prank and delete the posts.  But when the deranged sender of the message starts hunting them down one by one, they find themselves in a fight for their lives.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was a fun, fairly gory twist on the chain letter urban legends.  The opening scene sets you up for an interesting ride. (you might find that funny if /after you've seen the film, but anyway....) The underlying story behind the chain is very well played and executed.  Moderate gore, always fun.  I would watch again!

My score  3.5/5

"Hunger"

"Hunger" ~ 2009

Netflix description = Five strangers awake in an underground dungeon and discover that they've been kidnapped as part of a terrible experiment.  A sadistic scientist wants to answer a simple question.  What are they willing to do to survive after weeks without food.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I found this movie both disturbing and intriguing.  The backstory for our "sadistic scientist" brings and understanding to his "research".  So the question remains... at what point do we quit being human and revert back to animals.  Very good movie!  Should watch!!
My score  4/5
"Shark Night"
"Shark Night" ~ 2011
Netflix description = A weekend of island beach house debauchery turns into a hellish nightmare for a group of friends, when one of them loses an arm in a viscous shark attack.  Worse, the pals soon discover that the waters are infested with dozens of the toothy predators.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This movie was actually a pleasant surprise!  While I expected the usual "party on the boat, oh no a shark!" movie, that is not what we have here.  The storyline is unique and camera effects, pretty awesome!  Good movie!

My score  3.5/5

"Nine Dead"

"Nine Dead" ~ 2009

Netflix description = Nine strangers face the mind bender of a lifetime when a hooded madman locks them in a basement and announces that he will slay one of them every ten minutes until they uncover the mysterious connection they all share.  But starting without a single clue, can any of them solve the puzzle in less than 90 min?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I enjoyed this movie quite a bit!  The exchange between such a crazy collection of people seems like there could be no connection, hence no way out.  As time ticks, and people who are pieces of an intricate puzzle die, it seems unlikely they will find a connection.  When all is discovered and revealed it takes one last twist at the end.  Certainly worth the watch!!!
My score 3.5/5
"Apartment 143 (Emergo)"
"Apartment 143 (Emergo)" ~ 2011
Netflix description = Hired by a family to investigate supernatural activity in their apartment, a paranormal research group find themselves haunted by a malevolent force.  Their investigation is derailed as the strange manifestations become gradually more violent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I really enjoyed this movie.  It kept me guessing as the storyline kept sending surprises all the way through to the end.  Also, I always give credit when a movie can make me jump, and this did so.  Worth the watch!

My score   3/5

"Paranormal Activity 3"

"Paranormal Activity 3" ~ 2011

Netflix description = A malign and murderous spirit continues to dwell within a San Diego home in this second creepy sequel to 2007s chilling "Paranormal Activity".  Hoping to catch photo evidence of the spirit the residents soon become victims in their own horror film.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As much as I enjoyed this movie as a single film, I was disappointed in the way it changed the storyline created in the first two movies.  With that said, this is a good story, made me jump a couple of times which is always nice when you feel your heart racing.  Again, good movie, just out of order in trilogy.
My score  3/5
"The Human Centipede: First Sequence"
"The Human Centipede: First sequence" ~ 2009
Netflix description = After their car breaks down while in Germany, two American women wind up at a remote villa and soon find themselves trapped in a nightmare.  Dr. Josef Heiter kidnaps them for his demented experiment to create a human centipede.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I have watched this movie several times now, and even though it is so twisted - - I love it!!  The concept and such a different and imaginative storyline blew me away the first time bc it was so new.  To have the ability to think of something new in the genre of horror/thriller is getting harder and harder to do. I know that this movie is certainly not for all, but I enjoyed it!

My score 4/5

PS...  Weather you liked this movie or not, a comedy troupe did a musical version that is absolutely hilarious!!  Here is the link Centipede Musical as it is only on youtube.  However watch all 7 parts and tell me what you think!   :)

"Fear Island"

"Fear Island" ~ 2009

Netflix description = Five students on Spring Break meet up at a secluded island and discover that they've become prey to a mysterious and vengeful killer.  As the body count rises, the remaining members of the group learn their predicament relates to past misdeeds.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was, in all, a fairly good movie.  There wasn't a lot of violence shown, we saw the afters more than the doing, but the storyline was very good and the ending even better.  Certainly not a gore fest, but fun to watch.
"House at the end of the Street"
"House at the end of the Street" ~ 2012
Netflix description = Moving to a new town proves even more stressful for a teenage girl when she learns the house next door was the site of a double murder.  But after making friends with the victims son, she realizes there may be more to the story.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

While I enjoyed this movie very much, I would not have put it in the horror genre, maybe suspenseful thriller.  With that said, for what it was, it was a very good storyline, with a few surprises and even got one jump out of me.  lol.  Good watch, but not if you're looking for a horror movie.

"From Within"

"From Within" ~ 2008

When a rash of mysterious suicides strikes the idyllic burg of Grovetown it galvanizes the faith of the largely Christian community, which staunchly clings to its evangelical beliefs.  Convinced that the deaths are the work of something far more sinister than sheer fate, teenagers Lindsey and Aidan band together to unearth the real culprits and uncover a shocking revelation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had seen this before but forgot the title.  I was so happy to watch again!  I loved this movie!  The storyline is very good with a few twists and the best and last for the very end.  Great movie! Go watch!
My score  5/5
"Piranha"
"Piranha" ~ 1978
Netflix description = When a school of mutant piranha is accidently released into a river, and headed straight for a kids summer camp, its up to investigator Maggie McKeown and local woodsman Paul Grogan to prevent the potential carnage.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I love creature features, and there is a reason why this is still a classic.  For the time (1978) it was very bloody and gory, now its just entertaining.

My score 4/5

"Choose"

"Choose" ~ 2011

Netflix description = Believing that the murderer might somehow be tied to her mothers suicide, grad student Fiona teams with her detective father to find a serial killer whose ghastly modus operandi involves forcing his victims to choose between two gruesome fates.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a good serial killer story.  The cat and mouse games are always fun!  I did feel that there were not enough "choices" scenes, but the idea is a good one and the movie is worth the watch!
My score 3/5
"The Caller"
"The Caller" ~ 2011
Netflix description = This spooky thriller tracks the private nightmare of Mary Kee, a divorcee who begins receiving disturbing telephone calls from a woman she doesn't know.  After engaging the stranger initially, Mary tries to extricate herself - - with horrific results.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was a surprisingly very good movie.  The storyline becomes more intricate as it continues with a fantastic ending!!  Definitely worth the watch!!

My score 3.5/5  just a little bit above average  :)

"Evil Dead" double feature

"The Evil Dead" ~ 1981

Netflix description = During an unplanned stop at a remote cabin deep within the woods, a group of teens fall prey to a mysterious supernatural force.  As his pals become possessed and turn into flesh eating zombies, Ash Williams tries to keep his cool and save his skin.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Evil dead" ~ 2013
Netflix description =  When a group of friends vacation at an isolated cabin in the woods, they discover an evil book of the dead - - and unwittingly release a swarm of blood thirsty demons in this spine chilling remake of Sam Raimi's classic horror flick.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I thought that watching these together as a double feature would be fun.  With that said, had I not known that it was a "remake" I would have never put the two together.  The story of the kids in the cabin changes, the book changes etc.  Still bother were a fun watch and I loved the claymation in the original.  With that - both good movies!

My score 4/5 to both

"Ed Gein"

"Ed Gein" ~ 2000

Netflix description = This biopic paints a chilling portrait of Ed Gein, a lonely Wisconsin farmer who became Americas first famous serial killer, covering everything from his domineering mother to his 1957 arrest after a decade of horrific murders.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I liked this movie quite a bit, mostly because it actually held true to much of actual story.  The "portrait" they paint of Ed Gein almost made you want to feel sorry for him, but then the harsh reality again comes to surface that he was indeed insane, one of our own Human Monsters.
My score 3.5 /5
Todays plan of events...
Hello my little horror hounds!  Its nice to see so many people popping by to read my little blurbs!  Thank you!
Today we are going to do a double feature of sorts.  I am sitting with 2 movies, both remade.  I think I am going to watch "Evil Dead" back to back with its remake, and then again the same with "I spit on your grave".  I need to find the original "Fright night", all I have is the remake...  Oh well, anyhow I want to see if our technology, and as a society our change in what is scary or gory makes a difference.  I will be back later.
Also any suggestions or comments happily accepted! :)
"Donner Pass"
"Donner Pass" ~ 2012
Netflix description = More than 150 years after a party of settlers came to a gruesome end in the snowbound Donner pass, a group of teenagers on a ski trip are horrified to discover that someone in the area still has a voracious appetite for human flesh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is your basic teen party in the woods (cabin) gone wrong story.  Throw in the urban legend of Donner still roaming the wood and the recent unsettling deaths and it takes a few new twists.  Over all average fun entertainment!

My score  3/5

"Severance"

"Severance" ~ 2006

Netflix description = Awash in blood and black humor, director Christopher Smiths inventive horror flick follows a sales group, employed by an international weapons company, as they head for a team building retreat at a remote lodge in Hungary.  Before you can say "mayhem" a band of vengeful, psychotic commandos turns the tables and puts the merchants on the wrong end of their wares.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a fun, fairly gorey, backwoods vengeance tale.  There were some comedic moments that were perfectly timed and the overall storyline was good.  Certainly worth the watch!
My score 3.5/5
"Pontypool"
"Pontypool" ~ 2008
Netflix description = Valentines day is off to a bizarre start for a radio shock-jock when he runs into a crazed woman on his way to work, and thats only the beginning.  Soon, scores of other people in the small Ontario town of Pontypool start acting awfully odd.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was a very low budget, and semi boring movie about some mysterious "virus" that even at the end is never fully explained.  Most of the movie is in the radio station where they became quarantined.  All in all, I can't say that I hated it, I just kept waiting for it to get better...

My score 2/5  good background noise

Saturday, August 3, 2013

"Hidden"

"Hidden" ~ 2011

Netflix description = After Brian Karter's mother dies, he learns that he has inherited her experimental addiction treatment center, The Sanctuary.  But within the walls of this foreboding building are sinister secrets that were better left unknown.  The revolutionary machine used to cure addiction had a chilling side-effect, spawning mutant offspring with a hunger for human flesh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was almost the now standard explore an abandoned hospital, asylum, house of horrors etc movie.  However the story line had a little different twist and creepy mutant children are always scary!
My score 3/5  Average entertainment
"The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh"
"The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh" ~ 2012
Netflix description = After the mysterious death of the reclusive Rosalind Leigh, her estranged son Leon arrives at her house to take stock of his inheritance.  But there is more to this house than dark corners and dusty antiques.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Wow, this was not the right choice for my Saturday morning wake up movie.  This was a totally boring snoozefest!!  No death, a little bit of demon growling and an old lady narrating the whole thing.  Not worth the time!

My score 1/5

"Dying Breed"

"Dying Breed" ~ 2008

Netflix description = Eight years ago, Ninas siser disappeared in the Australian back country while searching for the mythical tasmanian tiger.  With only one clue - - a photo of a mysterious paw print - - in hand, Nina sets out to continue her sisters work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This movie was ok, I guess.  There is no horror regarding a tiger, nor was there a tiger...  They begin the movie with the legend of "The Pieman" and that is the story.  Should have been the title.  Anyhow, not what I was expecting, but good background noise and an ok watch.
My score 2.75/5  almost average... but not quite
"Ghost Game"
"Ghost Game" ~ 2004
Netflix description = Killing time inside a mountain retreat, three vacationing couples dig up a dusty board game in the cellar with a mysterious creepy title - - Ghost Game - - thats far to intriguing to pass up.  Little do they know that opening up the tantalizing box will release the spirits of three murdered witches and put all of their lives in danger.  Can these reluctant players unlock the games ancient secrets before they fall victim to its power.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I didn't really know what to expect when I turned this on.  Honestly my mind was thinking "Jumanji" gone bad.  I was surprised instead with a fun, campy ghost story.  There are some decent death scenes, and a couple good twists.  Also I liked the ending a lot.  I would recommend this as the average, pass the time, horror movie.  Decent watch

My score  3/5

"The Collection"

"The Collection" ~ 2012

Netflix description = After escaping the dungeon of a serial killer, a man is forced to return to the house of horrors to help save a woman now in the killers clutches.  The squad of mercenaries leading the rescue must first find their way through a maze of lethal traps.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First I have to say simply wow!  This is one of the better movies I have seen in a while.  The gore factor is very high, with "lethal traps" beyond expectations and the best mass extermination death scenes that I have witnessed!  Go watch!!
My score 5/5  :)
"A Haunting at Silver Falls"
"A Haunting at Silver Falls" ~ 2013
Netflix description = In this riveting supernatural thriller inspired by a true story, a recently orphaned teen arrives in a small pacific Northwest town to stay with relatives, only to find herself haunted by murdered twin girls.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I would have to say this is a little surprise treasure of a movie!  It wasn't really scary, but it was a great ghost story, with a perfect ending!

My score 4/5

"The Amityville Haunting"

"The Amityville Haunting" ~ 2011

Netflix description = Thirty years after the brutal slayings in Amityville, a new troubled family moves into the home.  One month later police uncover recordings made by the young son, which document the supernatural terror they faced before their gruesome deaths.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have to admit that I was not aware that this movie even existed.  I am happy that I found it!!  This is another "found footage" film, but very enjoyable.  There are some spooky effects with shadowing and the storyline itself was also good.  I would definitely say worth the watch!
My score:  3.5/5
