Bruiser

"Bruiser" ~ 2000

Netflix description = After awakening to a nightmare world in which he has no face, features or identity, Henry Creedlow -- stripped of all he's ever known -- sets out to destroy those who've betrayed him, including his two timing wife and his belittling boss.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While I admittedly enjoyed this movie very much, I can't call it a horror movie.  Maybe a thriller, but certainly more of a drama.  The story itself however is very good and well played out.  Although incorrect genre I would still recommend giving it a watch.
My score 3/5
"Shrooms"
"Shrooms" ~ 2007
Netflix description = A hallucinogenic trip goes bad when a group of college kids on holiday in Ireland munch some magic mushrooms and become plagued by nightmarish visions of death.  But are they really being stalked and killed, or is it just drug induced paranoia?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is one of my favorite movies and I must admit to watching it 4-5 times now.  Party in the woods stories can go many ways, and this did it well.  I liked the interaction of characters and especially how they tease you back and forth on what is the reality.  Great story!

My score  4/5

"Last Kind Words"

"Last Kind Words" ~  2012

Netflix description = Eli has just moved with his family deep into the backwoods of Kentucky.  Inexplicably drawn into the strange forest that lies beyond the farm, Eli encounters Amanda.  He realizes soon that the forest, and Amanda are harboring some very dark secrets.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I liked this movie quite a bit, but there were times it seemed a bit slow.  Overall however I will say this was a decent ghost story that properly told a back story.  Personally, I hate not knowing a backstory when there is one.  So kudos for that!
My score 3/5  still average   :)
"Croczilla"
"Croczilla" ~ 2012
Netflix description = A rampaging two-ton crocodile with an insatiable appetite is set loose in the city.  With the army on the hunt, Croczilla will terrorize innocent people while a sexy model tries to recover millions from its belly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I love cheesy creature features, right up there with the unnatural natural disaster movies.  However, I tried repeatedly to watch this disaster of a creature feature and finally gave up, not even an hour into it.  My advice, don't even bother!!!

My score 1/5

"Come Out and Play"

"Come Out and Play" ~ 2012

Netflix description = A young couple travels to Mexico on vacation and boats to a remote island paradise.  They are pleased to see a group of children playing on the beach, but soon realize there are no adults on the island - - and the kids are anything but innocent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Creepy kids will always be creepy, even more so if they are in large gangs carrying weapons, that in itself is a selling point for this movie.  I enjoyed it, but kept thinking it was almost like "Children of the corn - - In Mexico"   :).  Needless to say, the story is familiar with little teasers of a backstory that sounded almost more interesting than what we were watching.
My score 2.75/5  almost average, but just not there....
Age of Dinosaurs
"Age of Dinosaurs" ~ 2013
Netflix description = Using break-through flesh regeneration technology, a biotech firm creates a set of living dinosaurs.  But when the creatures escape their museum exhibit and terrorize Los Angeles, a former firefighter must rescue his teenage daughter from the chaos.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What a fun movie!  It felt like a Syfy creature feature, and thats probably why I loved it!  The dinosaurs were fairly realistic, and apparently when going in for kill, they like to eat the heads first lol.  This movie was silly, yet entertaining and I enjoyed every minute of it!!

My score 3.5/5  :)

State of Emergency

"State of Emergency" ~ 2013

Netflix description = After an explosion unleashes the contents of a biological weapons plant, the locals are transformed into an army of flesh eating zombies.  Trapped in the quarantine zone, Jim finds himself cut-off, confused and fighting for his life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really liked this movie, mostly bc it was different than most zombie flicks.  This movie centered around the small group (4) of survivors and their struggle.  The zombies are a different set than most, fast, but stupid and easy to beat.  Its a mellow type movie, but feel good movie, all the same.  I liked it, just not quite horror, more thriller.  :)
My score 3/5
The Devil Inside
"The Devil Inside" ~ 2012
Netflix description = At once spooky and grisly, this thriller follows a woman's quest to find the truth behind claims that her mother killed three people during an exorcism.  The daughters journey takes her to Italy, where she becomes involved in other exorcisms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When I first turned this on, I realized that I had watched it previously, but it had a different picture on the front cover.  For whatever reason I couldn't remember most of it so yesterday I watched it again.  Its another shaky hand held type camera story.  One they tried to pass off as a true story.  This isn't the jump, boo, slasher type movie, but the more creepy, psychological story.  As she digs into the past and her mothers exorcism the trail takes her to two priests who are involved in exorcisms and bring her along.  I thought it was a good demonic possession story, however, 10 minutes later, I couldn't tell you how it ended.  I had to re watch the ending today.  I enjoyed watching this film, but I cant say its at all memorable

My score 3/5

Hellgate

"Hellgate (Shadows)" ~ 2011

Netflix description = Following a car accident that leaves him in a coma and his wife and son dead, Jeff awakes to find he is able to see the specters of people who have died horribly, and later learns that these souls are forced to relive their own deaths for eternity.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What started with a promising storyline quickly became very dull and dry.  The only "gore" in this film would be the last 20 min, no good scares, no jumps, no kill scenes, no surprises.  It took me 2 different times to watch this all the way through - - and now Im glad its over.
My score  2/5 ....  I didn't totally hate it, good background noise movie ;)
Playback
"Playback" ~ 2012
Netflix description = Harlan Diehl  slaughtered his family capturing the dead on video.  When  students learning about the case watch the tape, they unleash a powerful evil.  They become pawns of the malevolent force that threatens to destroy them and their small town.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This movie was not what I expected by the description above.  While it was enjoyable, mindless entertainment, it was more a teen scream / possession movie.  The seemed light and the kills were cliche.  It meets all the check points for an average fun horror movie.

My score  Should be 3/5 however I have to admit even though he plays a creepy perv in this movie,  anything with Christian Slater automatically gets an extra point.  So overall  4/5  :)

Scar

"Scar" ~ 2007

Netflix description = Joan Burrows narrowly escapes death by murdering the sick serial killer who held her prisoner in his underground chamber of horrors.  Years later, Joan returns to her home town only to discover that a new batch of teenage victims has surfaced.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The all in all a pretty good movie.  It captured my attention almost immediately, and before opening credits, so thats always a plus in my book.  The basic storyline and creative game play for kills was also very good.  I did figure out "the bad guy" fairly early on but it did not deter from the enjoyment of watching the game unfold.
My score  3/5
The Big Bad
"The Big Bad" ~ 2011
Netflix description = In this blood splattered shocker, fiery Frankie Ducane is obsessed with seeking vengeance against the deranged killer who destroyed her family - - and she won't stop until she makes the monster suffer for his crimes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At least they got the title right.  This movie was pretty terrible and not the vengence movie I was anticipating.  There was very little gore, and a slow moving story.

My score 2/5 only bc I watched it all through without having to stop and try again  :)

Scourge

"Scourge" ~ 2008

Netflix description = When a local church burns down, an ancient evil creature is awakened and soon wreaks havoc on the small town of Haborford Washington.  The population slowly shrinks as the so-called "scourge" travels from body to body.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ah, the old ancient parasites are always an interesting story line.  This movie told the story well, made it interesting as to how the "scourge" is transmitted from host to host, and some pretty terrific gore scenes.
My score 3/5   Nice fun average movie :)
Chicago Massacre: Richard Speck
"Chicago Massacre: Richard Speck" ~ 2007
Netflix description = Michael Feifer directs this horrifying recreation of the events of July 13, 1966 when infamous serial killer Richard Speck took 9 student nurses hostage at South Chicago Community Hospital.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ugh!  I was hugely disappointed in this movie!  Mainly because it didn't have the facts correctly depicted.  The character of Richard Speck didn't even hold true in the backstory.  What a waste of time, at least I got my nails painted

My score  1/5  Don't waste your time, especially if you are into true crime and know the facts before watching.

The Haunting of Whaley House

"The Haunting of Whaley House" ~ 2012

Netflix description = When a skeptical tour guide and her friends decide to investigate Americas most haunted house, their amateur ghost hunt turns into more horror than they ever could have imagined in this spooky supernatural tale.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In general this was just another fun ghost story.  Its hard to find new twists to the "friends go into haunted house" stories.  This movie spiced it up with interesting characters, background action for the did you see that moments, and still a little twist at the end.  Worth watching
My score 3/5
The Bay
"The Bay" ~ 2012
Netflix description = From Director Barry Levinson comes this gruesome tale of ecological horror, that follows unfolding events in a seaside Maryland town as a deadly menace infests the bay and turns residents into hosts for mutant parasites.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is another found footage type movie, as it is being recalled by a young reporter who was there.  I really enjoyed this movie.  There is quite a bit of guts and gore, but good story follow through!  Definitely worth the watch!

My score  4/5

Elfie Hopkins: Cannibal Hunter

"Elfie Hopkins: Cannibal Hunter" ~ 2012

Netflix description = An aspiring teen detective, Elfie Hopkins, stumbles into her first real case when watching the mysterious new family, The Gammons, who seem to be much more dangerous than they appear, sending her into a terrifying hidden world right under her nose.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm not sure why this movie was rated R.  It was a "horror" genre, but in a juvenile way that would be very enjoyable for the new, younger, horror fan.  That said, there are some decent death scenes, and of course the taboo topic of cannibalism, but mostly this was just a fun, good movie.  Actually better than some of the others that I have been watching recently.  The characters were interesting, and even a good back story to their eating habits was given.
My score  4/5 :)
Home Sweet Home
"Home Sweet Home" ~ 2013
Netflix description = French horror director David Morlet's first english language film concerns a young married couple, who recently moved to a country house.  They return from a romantic night out to find an intruder who wants them dead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I found this movie very confusing, with too many unanswered questions.  The "intruder" makes it appear that this is a very personal vendetta, but with no backstory it again seems confusing.  There were some good jumps and gore factor and it kept my attention.  By the time the "intruder" is revealed, its still confusing.  I almost feel like I need to watch it again, to see if I missed something obvious.

My score 2.75/5.....  almost average :)

Infected

"Infected" ~ 2013

Netflix description = A relaxing outing in the countryside morphs into a nightmare when a blood-borne virus infects a group of hunters and breeds an army of bloodthirsty fiends with a compulsion to consume human flesh.
~~~~~~~~~~~
I really liked this movie for the story of how the "zombie virus" spreads.  This movie had high gore, and again good storyline.  It did tend to run a bit long...  but good story, average film!  If you like zombie movies, I would certainly recommend.
My score  3/5
Bitter Feast
"Bitter Feast" ~ 2010
Netflix description = Director Joe Maggio's deliciously nasty comic morsel stars James LeGros as Peter Gray, a self absorbed celebrity chef who goes off the deep end when a pompous but influential food blogger JT Franks (Joshua Leonard) posts a scathing review.  After kidnapping JT and shackling him in the basement, Peter administers a series of tortures but soon finds that his victim is far from helpless.  What ensues is an epic battle between two towering egos.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I enjoy vengeance movies, and this is one of the best I have seen.  The arrogance of both main characters is a bit overwhelming and at times I was unsure about who I was rooting for.  The way Peter Gray "tortures" or tests his prisoner is creative and inspired making this a fun watch.  Not a lot of gore, but not needed in this one.

My score  4/5  great watch!!

Splintered

"Splintered" ~ 2010

Netflix description =   Teenager Sophie persuades her skeptical friends to help track a mythical beast rumored to be prowling the wilds of Wales.  But the mates lark turns lethal when they get trapped in a deserted boarding school, facing a predator that is all too real.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At first by the description above, I thought I had the wrong movie.  However the story came together beautifully, even surprising me on the reveal of the "mythical beast".  I enjoyed this film and the story it told.
My score  3.5/5  Just above average but I could definitely watch again.
American Zombie
"American Zombie" ~ 2007
Netflix description = Part mockumentary, part unabashed gore fest, American Zombie follows filmmakers Grace Lee and John Solomon, both playing themselves, as they infiltrate a Los Angeles zombie community in an effort to document the undead subculture.  Finding that the reanimated aren't much different than the rest of us -- save for some patches of rotting flesh -- the movie makers offer a comical look at their marginalised subjects.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I loved this movie!!!!  It really gives an opposite story to most zombie movies made.  The film makers really show the "human" side to the "monsters" we all know and love!

My score  5/5.... go watch this! Soooooo worth it!!

Saturday, July 6, 2013

Truth or Die

"Truth or Die" ~ 2012

Netflix description = Four teenage friends set out for a night of partying at an isolated cabin.  But a psychopath with vengeance on his mind ruins their fun and forces them to play a game with life or death consequences.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a almost standard vengeance movie, with some very interesting choices to be made.  The death scenes were fairly creative, and the "psychopath" completed the mix!  Overall fairly average, but worth watching! Anyone want to play spin the bottle? ;)
Storage 24
"Storage 24" ~ 2012
Netflix description = In this creepy thriller, an emergency power shutdown leaves 4 friends trapped by random circumstances in a cavernous storage facility.  Before long the group realizes that something lethal is inside the darkened warehouse with them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was a fun creature feature.  The monster is on borderline of ridiculous, but thats half the fun of the story.  This movie also has a side story that leaves you rooting for the monster in some cases. :)  Again, mindless, fun entertainment.

My score 3/5.... a fun watch!

Grave Encounters 2

"Grave Encounters 2" ~ 2012

Netflix description = A year after a film crew spent a fatal night there, a new team is entering the halls of Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital in search of the truth.  What the discover will make believers out of all of them.  That is, any who live to tell the tale.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I said with the first one, I love a good ghost story, and once again was not disappointed!  With this sequel we get a little more knowledge into Collingwood and what really happened to the first crew.  If possible watch the two together... Great movie night!
My score  4/5
Grave Encounters
"Grave Encounters" ~ 2011
Netflix description = In this horror flick, the stars of a paranormal investigation TV show spend the night in a derelict psychiatric hospital, hoping to uncover whats been going bump in the night.  As their cameras roll they find themselves trapped - - and hunted!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I love a good ghost story!  This movie did not disappoint!  This movie had a lot of the creepiness that made you want to keep an eye on the background just in case.  Also it did make me jump, so theres a half point automatically.  I'm off to watch the sequel next! :)

My score 4.5/5

Crowsnest

"Crowsnest" ~ 2012

Netflix description = When 5 friends disappear during a road trip, police discover videos that graphically detail their bizarre and horrific experiences after crashing into an RV and encountering the warped deviants of an isolated community.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a pretty good movie.  I'm always in anticipation of how well the can change the stranded in the middle of nowhere with a couple of psychos storyline.  They did well! :)  I also liked the bad hand held camera filming, it made the story a bit more in the "jump factor"
My score  3/5  Fun, but still average entertainment
Hansel & Gretel Get Baked
"Hansel and Gretel Get Baked" ~ 2013
Netflix description = In this modern stoner fairy tale, siblings Hansel and Gretel are trying to score more of a potent new strain of pot called Black Forest.  They find the old woman who grows the cannabis - - but then learn shes actually a witch with cannibalistic plans.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was a fun 420 twist on an old fairy tale.  Heck, if I found weed that let me see music, I might be tempted to go visit a witch myself. lol  Anyhow, fun movie from beginning to end.  I loved it!

My score 4.5/5

Killer Mountain

"Killer Mountain" ~ 2011

Netflix description = When an expedition disappears on the worlds highest unclimbed mountain, and expert climber is lured out of retirement to save them.  But after he hears the teams panicked final transmission, he becomes convinced that something more sinister awaits.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Im pretty sure that this was another Syfy creature feature.  Lots of action, stuff blows up and a fairly interesting monster.
My score 3/5  average made for tv movie
The ABC's of Death
"The ABC's of Death" ~ 2012
Netflix description = 26 masters of the horror genre were each given a letter of the alphabet around which to concoct a story about death in the audacious anthology film that explores the terrifying, humorous and poignant aspects of the journey we all must take.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This was one of the most bizarre things I have watched, possibly ever!  I love short films, so I was intrigued with the concept.  Many are foreign, but the collection itself is wonderfully horrible!  Some just left me sitting in shock and questioning "WTF did I just see?"  Definitely worth the time to watch!!

My score  5/5  I will be rewatching soon  :)

Hatchet 2

"Hatchet II" ~ 2010

Netflix description = A terrorized woman escapes from a bayou inhabited by a vicious murderer whose outward deformations  hide an even more twisted soul.  Determined to avenge the murder of her family she returns to the scene with backup.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am very sorry to admit that I haven't seen the first one, but I certainly intend too!  This was a bloodbath, full gore movie from the very start!  I loved every unique death scene, and there was some not seen before.  This movie is moving to my list of favorites for just mindless brutalistic entertainment!!
My score  5/5  Loved it!
The Nun
"The Nun" ~ 2005
Netflix description = For the students at a Catholic school for girls, one particular nun made their lives a living hell -- until she disappeared.  But years later when alumni begin dropping off the survivors can't help but feel a familiar menacing presence among them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Honestly, I had objections at even turning this one on, but I was glad that I did.  I enjoyed it, there are some little twist to change things up.  Still, predictably average, but a fun watch! :)

My score  3/5

Monday, July 1, 2013

Spiders

"Spiders" ~ 2013

Netflix description = When giant poisonous mutant spiders invade New York's subway tunnels and create chaos in the city, a transit supervisor and a health inspector must keep the queen away from her eggs to prevent her from creating an army of the killer spiders.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm pretty sure that this was a made for Syfy movie.  I love the cheesy insect movies almost as much as their natural disaster movies! :)  Theres not too much more I can say that the NF description hasn't already.  I loved this movie!  This movie was cheesy and fun!
My score 4/5  what's not to love about giant mutant spiders  :)
Psycho
"Psycho" ~ 1998
Netflix description = In this remake of the 1960 shocker, Marion makes a fateful stop at the Bates motel, run by mamas boy Norman Bates.   Soon Marion goes missing sparking an investigation by her lover, her sister and a private eye, who discovers Normans morbid secret.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I had not seen this remake yet, I was hesitant, but now can admit that I was pleasantly surprised.  This "modern" version still holds true to the original thriller, while adding more back story.  I felt we got to know the characters better, therefore making an old story new and enjoyable.

My score 3.5/5   just a bit above average :)

The Omen

"The Omen" ~ 1976

Netflix description = Robert and Katherine Thorn raise a boy, Damien, in place of their stillborn infant.  All is well until it is foretold that Damien is the spawn of the devil.  Soon, Robert is pitted against the forces of hell and must make a fateful decision.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been so long since seeing this movie it seemed new to me, even though I knew the story.  I enjoyed the subtle, psychological creepiness of it and though it will always be a classic, by todays horror standards it is a bit outdated.
My score 3/5  always a classic....
The Cabin in the Woods
"The Cabin in the Woods" ~ 2011
Netflix description = In this surprising spin on a classic horror set-up, five friends arrive at a secluded cabin with clear instructions for their anticipated mountain getaway.  But when the rigid rules are broken, punishment is swift and everyone will pay.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

First I must say, the Netflix description is ridiculous, and not really a decent description.  Anyhow, this is one of my new favorites!  Being a Joss Whedon fan already, I was excited to see what he would do to make a "new" horror movie.  I was not disappointed!  I have watched this movie repeatedly and still catch new things each time.  This movie is just a fun ride from beginning to end!

My score 5/5  Go watch! Now!  ;)

Grimm Love

"Grimm Love" ~ 2006

Netflix description = In this shocking thriller based on a true tale, graduate student, Katie Armstrong's research into killer and cannibal Oliver Hardwen and his willing victim, Simon Grombeck, leads to a dark journey into the mens twisted deed and tortured psyches.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After watching "Diary of a Cannibal", I was much happier to see the story being told closer to the original twisted truth. It delved deeper into the characters, and darkness surrounding their lives. Originally German court banned this movie for infringing the personal rights of Armin Meiwes but the film had been sold for international release.  In May of 2009 the federal court of justice annulled the ban in favor of freedom of arts.
This movie is dark, but certainly worth the watch!
My score  5/5  If you like the true crime stories, you'll like this! Highly recommended
Catching up
So I have been about, and still watching, but once again guilty of not transposing written word into type.  I am currently 9 movies behind so I will begin to play catch up very soon.  :)
